Microsoft launches a connected thermostat!

Microsoft is now launching the connected thermostats by unveiling GLAS.

Here is the video of 19 July announcing the news:

Not a 100% Microsoft product.

To join the connected thermostat market, Microsoft has partnered with Johnson Controls (specializing in automotive equipment and air conditioning systems).

Compete with Google and Amazon.

Microsoft will face the market leader NEST. As a reminder, NEST was bought by Google in 2014 for $ 3.2 billion.

Hello Cortana.

GLAS embeds the virtual assistant made by Microsoft Cortana. In practical terms, you can control the thermostat with your voice. Cortana job will be to run GLAS, using Windows 10 IoT, the operating system dedicated to connected devices.

Amazon already has many builders of their virtual assistant, Alexa. Microsoft need to struggle with this US trade giant to be present on this market by using the software level to propose their definition of a successful “connected” experience.

Microsoft is trying its luck in the market of connected thermostats. By competing with Amazon and Nest (Google), Microsoft will have to rely on its software know-how to provide a simple but complete user experience.

For now they aren’t any information on price or availability in Europe yet.
